As the temperature begins to rise in Meridian, local residents are excited about the fun activities of summer that they’ve been looking forward to all year. Since June is Firework Eye Safety month, the team at Primary Eyecare and Optical of Meridian wants to remind all of our patients about the importance of vision safety, especially when fireworks are involved.
All optometrists agree that fireworks are beautiful to see from a distance, but patriotism and pride in our country should never jeopardize the health of our eyes.
Meridian eye doctors are always saddened to read the news of people who have injured their eyes because of accidents with fireworks, especially when safety precautions are widely publicized. We want to stress the importance of following basic vision safety protocols throughout the year, and not just during the 4th of July.
Optometrists are devoted to providing the best possible eye care to each patient and this includes spreading safety information. Did you know that fireworks are the cause of more than 9,000 injuries each year? Those sobering statistics come from the American Academy of Ophthalmology, which stresses to the public that fireworks are not mere playthings but are dangerous, incendiary devices that can destroy a person’s vision.
So if you plan to ignite your own fireworks this summer, always follow the manufacturer’s instructions. Never aim fireworks at a person and make sure that an adult is supervising the festivities. If you are injured, do not rub your eyes or rinse them. Seek immediate medical attention from a professional eye doctor to safeguard your vision following a fireworks injury.
