Computer Vision Care from our Optometrists in Meridian

Our eyes seem to do more work than ever these days, especially since society has come to rely so heavily on computers and mobile devices. Unfortunately, the modern habit of staring at monitor screens and handheld LED displays for hours at a time can have a seriously detrimental effect on the eyes. If you routinely suffer from eye discomfort, fatigue and vision problems, you might be experiencing computer vision syndrome (CVS). Fortunately, our eye doctor at Primary Eyecare & Optical of Meridian, Dr. Duong, can provide you with a number of eye care solutions to this very real problem.

Treating Computer Vision with a Meridian Optometrist

CVS, also referred to as digital eye strain, is characterized by symptoms of fatigue or discomfort caused by extended use of digital displays. You may experience:

  • Eye pain, itching or redness

  • Headaches

  • A feeling of fatigue in the eye muscles

  • Blurred or double vision

  • Neck pain

  • Shoulder stiffness

These symptoms may stem from multiple causes. Neck and shoulder discomfort, for instance, may be related to a non-ergonomic monitor height or angle. Itchy, reddened eyes may stem from dryness due to the eyes' tendency to blink far less frequently than normal while staring at a computer screen. Blurred vision and headaches may be caused by underlying issues such as amblyopia, presbyopia or convergence insufficiency that make near focus more challenging. The blue-tinged light from an LED panel can contribute to glare-related fatigue -- and the segment of this spectrum called HEV light may even contribute to the development of macular degeneration.

Blue Light Blocking and Other Solutions

Our optometrists in Meridian can provide the appropriate eye care to end your CVS issues. Eye function and visual acuity testing may reveal problems that can be corrected through vision therapy and corrective lenses. We may also recommend:

  • Blue light blocking lenses - Modern eyewear can be made with blue light blocking lenses that filter out some of the HEV radiation that might harm the eye. This reduces glare and eye strain while also helping you protect yourself against future vision loss.

  • Anti-reflective coatings - We offer eyeglasses with special anti-reflective coatings to minimize fatiguing glare and keep reflected light out of your eyes.

  • Workplace modifications - We can advise you on how to adjust your work area so that you're using natural light (which is easier on the eyes than artificial light) without causing glare from your monitor. Adjusting the monitor brightness and position can also help prevent CVS.

  • Lifestyle adjustments - Sometimes you need to pamper your eyes a bit to keep them from suffering the effects of CVS. We can talk to you about the duration and frequency of "blink breaks" that keep your eyes fresh and hydrated.
