Our Meridian Optometrist Team Provides Diagnostic and Therapeutic Care For Cataracts

At Primary Eyecare & Optical of Meridian MS, our Meridian optometrist team has spent several years helping people manage and understand more about their cataracts, a very common, age-related eye health issue affecting more than half of Americans over the age of 80 (although people younger than this can certainly develop them).

Cataract Basics: What They Are & How They Form

Cataracts occur when the lenses inside your eyes (which sit directly behind the colored irises) go from being transparent and clear to opaque and cloudy. Often as a consequence of aging, the fibers making up the lenses become clumpy and structurally disrupted, leading to the "foggy window" effect.

Aging is a risk factor for cataracts, however other factors are believed to exist, including smoking, alcohol use, diabetes, a family history of cataracts, a history of eye surgery or injury, or a history of excessive sun exposure.

Signs & Symptoms of Cataracts

Cataracts develop slowly, so symptoms do as well. The primary symptom of cataracts is a blurry vision at near and far distances. Additional symptoms include colors appearing to fade, impaired night vision, increased sensitivity to glare and bright lights, halos around bright lights, double vision, and frequent prescription changes.

The Role of an Optometrist in the Management of Cataracts

Cataracts can be detected by a comprehensive eye exam before symptoms become noticeable. In this way, prevention and early screening is a crucial role of the optometrist. Our team can give you tips on changing behaviors (such as smoking or not wearing UV-protecting sunglasses while outside) which are known risk factors, especially if you have a family history of cataracts.

Though they can't be cured, cataracts can be managed. In the early stages, our Meridian optometry team can prescribe you appropriate eyeglasses or implement low vision techniques and strategies (including an anti-glare coating on eyewear) to help you manage in your day to day life better.

In later stages, cataracts can be removed and replaced surgically in a relatively easy operation; our Meridian optometry team can provide pre- and post-operative care to ensure maximum results.
