LASIK (laser in situ keratomileuses) has soared in popularity during the past decade, enabling eye doctors to help men and women with myopia (nearsightedness), hyperopia (farsightedness) and astigmatism enjoy crisp, clear vision without the need for glasses or contact lenses. Each year, millions of people have LASIK procedures, relying on their optometrists to provide them with the pre-op and post-op care they need to achieve the best outcomes possible. As a leader among the optometrists in Meridian, Dr. Minh Duong has extensive experience in providing state-of-the-art pre-op and post-op eye care for patients undergoing LASIK. Here’s what you can expect.
When you see, light enters your eye through your cornea, the clear covering of your eye located over your pupil. Aberrations in the shape of your cornea can distort the way you see, causing vision problems like myopia, hyperopia, and astigmatism. Glasses and contact lenses address these issues by compensating for the irregularities in your cornea. LASIK uses precisely-delivered beams of laser energy to gently reshape your cornea, preventing those distortions in your vision so you no longer need corrective lenses.
As good as LASIK is, it’s not always an ideal choice for every patient. To determine if LASIK is a good choice for you, Dr. Duong will review your medical history and perform a comprehensive eye exam to assess your vision and evaluate the shape and thickness of your cornea to determine if you’re a good candidate for LASIK. A comprehensive exam helps eye doctors identify issues that might interfere with the results of LASIK. Once the exam is complete, Dr. Duong will provide you with a referral to a leading eye surgeon with extensive experience in successful LASIK procedures. The eye surgeon will perform additional exams and evaluations to “map out” your procedure prior to your surgical appointment. In addition to providing you with a referral, Dr. Duong will describe the LASIK procedure so you know what to expect during and after your surgery.
After your surgery, you’ll need to have several follow-up visits to check on your progress as your eye heals. Usually, visits begin the day following your procedure, with additional visits scheduled during the six months after surgery and a “final” follow-up exam at 12 months post-op. During these exams, Dr. Duong will perform evaluations of your vision and examine your eye to make sure it’s healing properly. Throughout your care, he’ll stay in close contact with your surgeon so you can feel confident your care will remain optimized and focused on your specific needs.
